The Reverse Superman Montipora is a striking SPS coral renowned for its bold colour reversal of the classic Superman Montipora. Featuring a vivid red to orange base contrasted by intense blue to purple polyps, this coral delivers exceptional contrast and instantly draws the eye in any reef aquarium.
Highly sought after by SPS collectors, the Reverse Superman Montipora combines iconic colouration with reliable growth, making it a standout feature coral in both mixed reefs and SPS-dominant systems.
Montipora corals originate from the Indo-Pacific region, with natural populations found across:
The Great Barrier Reef, Australia
Indonesia
Fiji and Tonga
The Red Sea
Central and Western Pacific reef systems
In the wild, Montipora species inhabit shallow to mid-depth reef zones, where they are exposed to strong natural sunlight and consistent water movement. These conditions explain their preference for bright lighting and good flow in aquarium environments.
The original Superman Montipora became one of the most iconic SPS corals in the reef-keeping hobby due to its unmistakable red base and blue polyps. As selective propagation advanced, the Reverse Superman Montipora emerged—flipping the colour pattern while retaining the same dramatic contrast that made the original so popular.
Today, the Reverse Superman is prized for its rarity, visual impact, and ability to maintain colour under stable reef conditions.
Classified as an SPS (Small Polyp Stony) coral, the Reverse Superman Montipora typically exhibits an encrusting to plating growth form, spreading efficiently across rockwork before developing textured plates as it matures.
High-contrast reversed colouration
Tight, evenly spaced polyps
Strong fluorescence under blue lighting
With stable parameters, growth is fast and highly rewarding.
Reverse Superman Montipora performs best under medium to high lighting, closely mimicking its natural reef habitat.
Lighting: Medium–High
Best placed in the mid to upper sections of the aquarium
Insufficient light may reduce colour intensity
Provide moderate to strong, random flow to encourage healthy tissue, good polyp extension, and to prevent detritus buildup. Avoid direct, laminar flow aimed straight at the frag.
As with all SPS corals, stability is critical. Maintain consistent levels of:
Calcium
Alkalinity
Magnesium
Along with low nutrient levels and balanced trace elements. Regular testing and controlled dosing will support long-term colour and growth.
Primarily photosynthetic, Reverse Superman Montipora can benefit from occasional supplemental feeding, including:
Fine powdered coral foods
Micro-plankton blends
Used sparingly, these feeds can enhance colour vibrancy and overall vitality.
Montipora corals are generally peaceful, but may engage in slow chemical competition as they expand. Allow adequate spacing to accommodate encrusting and plating growth.
Frag size: Approximately 1 inch
Each frag is unique and may vary slightly in colour and pattern depending on lighting and tank conditions.
Care Level: Moderate
Flow: Medium–High
Lighting: Medium–High
Temperament: Peaceful
Moderate
Medium
Moderate, indirect flow.
Lower to middle areas of the aquarium.
Peaceful.
Moderate, with gradual skeletal growth and increasing polyp density over time.
Typically supplied as a multi-polyp frag unless otherwise stated.
Purple Goniopora thrive in stable reef aquariums with consistent water chemistry.
Avoid ultra-low nutrient systems, as Goniopora generally perform best in mature, nutrient-balanced aquariums.
Purple Goniopora benefit from regular supplemental feeding to encourage long-term health, vibrant colour and strong polyp extension.
Feed lightly but consistently 2–3 times per week.
Purple Goniopora appreciate thoughtful placement and a gentle introduction to your aquarium.
Medium lighting is recommended.
Too much light may cause the coral to retract, while insufficient lighting can reduce extension.
Light acclimation is recommended whenever introducing a new specimen.
Provide moderate, indirect flow that keeps the polyps gently swaying.
Avoid strong, direct flow, which may prevent full extension.
Random, alternating flow patterns generally produce the best results.
Purple Goniopora originate from the Indo-Pacific region and are commonly found throughout:
In the wild they inhabit sheltered lagoon environments and protected reef zones with moderate lighting, gentle water movement and nutrient-rich conditions.
Once considered difficult to keep, advances in modern reef keeping—including improved lighting, flow control and nutrition—have made healthy, aquacultured Goniopora far more reliable long-term additions to today's reef aquariums.
Purple Goniopora is one of our favourite LPS corals thanks to its elegant movement and rich purple colouration.
When fully extended, hundreds of delicate tentacles create constant movement that contrasts beautifully with SPS colonies and other fleshy LPS corals, making it an excellent centrepiece for mixed reef aquariums.
